The History of Higher Learning Child Care Academy, Inc.
Higher Learning Child Care Academy, Inc. began its journey in 1994 as a home-based child care center, licensed to care for 8 students per shift while operating 3 shifts in the home of its founder, Barbara Borders. Serving children from birth to age 12, the center quickly became a trusted provider of high-quality child care in the community.

In 2000, as demand grew, Higher Learning transitioned to a dedicated facility licensed for 48 students. This move marked a significant milestone, providing the space and resources needed to accommodate its expanding enrollment. By 2006, the center had once again outgrown its facility and relocated to a larger location, capable of housing 120 students per shift.

As the center’s reputation for excellence grew, so did its footprint. In 2010, Higher Learning expanded to operate two locations, serving families in both Shelby and Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The following year, the Academy further diversified its offerings by opening a boutique child care center and an after-school program. These two additional locations were eventually transferred to other entities, allowing Higher Learning to focus on its core mission and flagship centers.

Higher Learning Child Care Academy proudly achieved and maintains a 5-star rating, a testament to its commitment to excellence in early childhood education.
In 2021, the Shelby location—one of the largest child care facilities in the city—was closed as part of an NCDOT project to expand city infrastructure by constructing a state highway. Despite this challenge, Higher Learning continues to thrive, operating successfully in Kings Mountain, NC. Plans are currently underway to open additional locations, ensuring the Academy’s legacy of nurturing and educating young minds continues for years to come.
